    Gunn Financial Appointments are delighted to be working in partnership with Kids Operating Room as they look to appoint a suitably qualified Financial Controller to cover a period of maternity leave for a minimum of 12mths.  

    The Organisation

    Kids Operating Room is a Scottish charity dedicated to transforming global healthcare by ensuring children worldwide have access to life-saving surgical care. They install fully equipped paediatric operating rooms across Africa, Latin America and Asia, addressing the critical gap in surgical services for children.

    Since its founding, Kids Operating Room has shipped and installed operating theatres in over 20 countries, improving the lives of thousands of children. The charity also invests in training local surgeons and anaesthetists, ensuring sustainable healthcare solutions rather than temporary fixes.

    The Role

    As Financial Controller, you will assume responsibility for the charity’s financial statements, provide financial oversight and lead the day to day management of the charity’s financial activities. Reporting to the Finance Director, you will manage financial planning, reporting, and governance, ensuring all resources are used effectively and align with the charity’s mission and values.

    The role requires a proactive and values-driven individual with excellent financial acumen and a passion for working in the third sector. You will be instrumental in supporting the organisation’s sustainability while ensuring financial compliance, transparency, and accountability to its’ stakeholders, inc. Trustees, Funders, and Regulatory Bodies.

    Key responsibilities:

    • Provide financial insight and analysis to support decision-making by budget holders, Senior Management Team and Board of Trustees
    • Lead financial planning, inc. annual budgeting, forecasting, and long-term financial modelling
    • Manage and oversee day-to-day financial operations, including payroll, accounting, and financial controls
    • Ensure timely and accurate financial reporting, including management accounts, cash flow reports, and statutory returns including Taxation (VAT and CT)
    • Oversee the preparation and submission of statutory accounts in accordance with Scottish charity law (OSCR) and UK accounting standards (SORP)
    • Ensure compliance with all financial regulations and best practice
    • Identify and manage financial risks, ensuring appropriate risk management strategies are in place
    • Work closely with Auditors and Trustees to maintain strong governance and internal controls
    • Support the charity in implementing ethical investment policies
    • Oversee the financial management of grants, ensuring Funders’ requirements are met and funds are utilised efficiently
    • Lead, mentor and develop a small Finance team, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement

    The Preferred Candidate

    • Fully Qualified Accountant (CA, ACCA, CIMA, or equivalent)
    • Knowledge of FRS 102 and the Charities SORP
    • Previous experience of managing and leading the external audit process
    • Proven experience in a senior finance role, preferably within the charity or not-for-profit sector
    • Strong knowledge of financial management, accounting principles, and charity governance (desirable)
    • Ability to communicate complex financial information to non-financial staff and stakeholders
    • Experience of managing a small Finance team and collaborating with senior leadership
    • Experience of managing charity finances, inc. grants, donations and social enterprise activities (desirable)
    • You will have a passion for working in a purpose-driven organisation, with a commitment to the charity’s values
